Research project

Martin Vučetić has received a Feodor Lynen Research Fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation for an 18-month research stay at the Institute for Byzantine Studies of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts in Belgrade. From March 2027 to August 2028, he will work on his research project, “The Byzantine Emperor at War: Modes of Representation and Their Functions in Historiography and Chronicles,” under the mentorship of Dr. Bojana Krsmanović.

The project examines how Byzantine historians and chroniclers from the seventh to the fifteenth century portrayed emperors who personally participated in military campaigns and battles. Its central question is how the sources connected and evaluated military action to imperial rule. Through a systematic analysis and comparison of historiographical modes of representation, the project aims to identify continuities and changes in conceptions of imperial authority, responsibility, and legitimacy. In doing so, it encompasses research questions from Byzantine historiography, the study of imperial power, and military history.
